Sharp Objects By Gillian Flynn (Yes it is another Flynn novel REVIEW!!!)

I gave you a review for Gone Girl, and now I’m coming to you with another review! *Drum Roll* SHARP OBJECTS.

If you haven’t read any of Gillian Flynn’s novel, the movie that just came out this october Gone Girl was previously a book by Flynn. About a year or two ago this book became a best selling physiological thriller. This is my favorite genre, I love thrillers. I have this edgy thing with horror, which is that I enjoy horror but I can’t sleep at night because I get nightmare, so thrillers are the next best thing. Gillian Flynn is the new girl in town, she even amazes the horror/thriller king himself, Stephen King (Got the pun? Ha). Since I already read her best seller I decided to start off with the first book she published, before Gone Girl, before she was really known, back when my girl Flynn was in the underground, Sharp Objects. I honestly don’t know why this book didn’t get any sort of fame before Gone Girl, but it could be that all you guys are just romantic lunatics, who felt attracted at once to the Gone Girl chaos, I know I did.  But I actually really enjoyed Sharp Objects, and I would say I liked it a bit more then Gone Girl, maybe because I found myself being reflected in Camille. Well, Lets get on to the review!

Sharp Objects is the story of Camille, she’s a crime journalist. She gets the main story on crime, and she writes about it for a Chicago newspaper. Her Newspaper needs a little help, they are not getting enough readers, and no one knows about it. So her Editor decides to send Camille back to her hometown of Wind Gap to investigate the murder one girl and the disappearance of another. To Camille this means facing the house she nearly dreads, reminding her of the childhood she loathed, and the reason for the number of words on her skin. Camille as we get to know is a cutter, a very active cutter who doesn’t just cut but she engraves words into her flesh, her whole body is filled with them. Although she hates the idea, her editor has always been a good friend to her and she knows how badly he needs this so she accepts to cover the story.

Once she gets into town Camille feels it all coming back to her, and we first start to realize her town is quite boring, lonely, and old. It keeps to itself, and everyone is blind to the outside world. Once she gets their we learn about the two girls named Natalie and Ann. We know that Natalie has been kidnapped and Ann’s death occurred 9 months prior to Natalie’s disappearance. The town is out looking for Natalie, the police is investigating, and to help the police is Richard Willis from Kansas City. Camille gets to work the moment she gets to Wind Gap, but before this we meet her family as well. Camille’s family is strange, actually their pass strange they are fucken bizarre, and I didn’t really get to understand it until the end because to me they seem quite normal just a lot of misunderstanding between them. There is Adora her mother, her half sister Amma, and her step-father I think his name was Alan, but he’s not important in the story he’s practically Adora’s dog, he does anything Adora wants, he doesn’t really speak, and depends on her.

Adora’s character had two sides throughout the story, she either cared to much about Camille or she hated the shit out of her own daughter. She starts off as a caring mother allowing Camille to stay, we don’t really see anything wrong with her other then Camille saying she never liked her mother, but we don’t really understand until Adora begins to develop such anger towards  Camille, and at first I thought she was blaming the death of Camille’s sister Marian who died when Camille was only thirteen, saying Camille didn’t cry enough, didn’t show enough emotion. Then towards the end Adora totally snaps, saying that Camille reminds her of her own mother. I didn’t like Adora’s character she reminded me of my father in a way, giving her opinion and not caring about what she’s saying or who she hurts, always wanting to be right and acting like the victim when she gets upset, spoiled I tell you. I thought it was normal, but then she takes it to far. *if you’ve already read the book you are allowed to read more about Adora below*

Amma’s is a bitch, she is by far the character I hated the most. I eventually started to ease up with her towards the end but them BAM she goes and she does the Amma thing again where you just want her to get a good spanking. She is spoiled, rude, out of control, and mean. Mean girls looks nice next to this little blonde bitch. I hated her character so much but at the same time I love how much detail Flynn put into her, how we learned Amma inside and out, from her drug addictions, to her being the queen bee of her whole school, to her depression, the mean way she treats her friends and camille, how she basically plays mind games with people. I hated her 13 year old guts though, and towards the end I wanted to understand her but it was just to much.

These are the 3 main characters, along with some other major characters such as Natalie’s brother, the detective, Amma’s friends, the Policeman in charge, but I won’t get into their details. I did notice that this books is very graphic, this town has some mental problems as a whole, it’s so close minded you can’t fucken breath while you’re reading the novel. Theirs Camille’s cutting, her friends are bitches, their like 30 year old woman who feel superior then everyone else so they bring everyone down if  they aren’t part of their social status. Lucky for Camille, she was the most popular being the daughter of Adora another Amma in her own time. Then you start realizing this town loves to have sex, a lot of sex. They don’t describe it, they just tell you. Camille tells you how much of a slut she was, sleeping around with every boy. At 13 I believe she had already lost her virginity to a random guy in the football team, by the next week 4 guys were running on her, same with her friends. That’s not all their is, it’s as if all these girls did was have sex when they were young, and time had not changed anything because it was the same with Amma. It also seems like everyone here did drugs and drank until they couldn’t stay still, everyone was drunk. This town scares the shit out of me, and I loved the many detail that Flynn put into this novel. It’s a 5 star read, this thriller is sure to keep you on your toes.

SPOILERSSSSSSS!

As for the two girls who died, they were outcast, when Amma takes them in they begin to get closer to her, they begin to get to know Adora and this makes Amma jealous causing her to kill them. Adora however has been trying to kill her daughters all along giving them pills and stuff just so she can take care of them, it’s called münchausen syndrome by proxy meaning that the health problems are being caused by the care giver to to those who are in their care, it’s a form of child abuse. This is why Marian dies, because she allowed Adora to care for her and keep sicken her. This bitch is fucken crazy, because she continued to do this to Amma and since Camille didn’t allow her she gave up on her, she decided that if Camille didn’t want her care she didn’t deserve her love either.  These bitches are crazy!!

Camille, I liked her.  I thought she was sweet, she was misunderstood, she was different. But part of me was disappointed at times because of how much self confidence she lacked, ow much sexual tension went on in her. Like you don’t need the drugs, the guys, the vodka, you’re a chicago writer for gods sake, stop. I understand you have problems, but you’re a whole lot better then this shitty ass town. I just wanted someone to help her out here, which I understood why she hated being there so much. I somewhat really wished she would’ve stayed with Natalies brother, but he’s like 18 so that would have been a bit weird, but I wouldn’t be surprised. Anything can happen in a Flynn book :).

I Deleted My Last Post Because I Didn’t Put Enough Effort Into It & A Letter To Those With Mental Illnesses.

Hey guys,

Before I continue to give you book recommendations, I want to tell you a few things. I deleted the last post with my 3  poetry   suggestions because I feel like when I write I haven’t put enough effort into what I’m writing and that’s why I want to start fresh. I love reading, it’s my far the longest passion I’ve had for something, along with science and writing, so I want to give you guys the best review possible, I want you guys to read my review and be convinced that this is either the best or worse book I’ve ever read, so I will be rewriting some reviews, I will be writing a number of reviews as well. The years about to end and I want to read a lot of books, I want to read so many books and write about all of them. Because this is what I love to do, I love to grab a book, enjoy the shit out of it, and then come and tell you guys all the details and spoilers and reasons you should be reading it as well. I love every genre, every character, every form of writing, I passionately fell in love with words before I fell in love with boys. I’m debating whether I should do a booktube, or videos for you guys but I suck with a video camera so when I get working on that.

Due to the two mental disorders I’m constantly having, Anxiety and Depression have been hell. They’ve been something I don’t ever wish upon anyone, because even one deserve to feel as if their living safely, not holding onto each day like it’s their last because you feel a sense of panic or insecurity. I don’t know any of you, chances are that one of you also suffer from a mental disorder and I want you to know, from a person who’s been down that road since she was ten years old you aren’t alone. When everyone tries to tell  you to just be happy and let it go, I know it isn’t as simple as they make it sound. You are a warrior, you live each day battling something you never asked for or enlisted for. You carry yourself through this, and if you’re alive right now I know you are doing one heck of a good job standing on your feet. If they all call you weak, screw em. You’re not weak, you’re the strongest person I know because unlike them you’re facing demons everyday, you’re facing a number of symptoms you can’t even describe, you’re facing seconds away from feelings like you are dying, it’s not all in your head when you’re living it.

Keep being strong, keep holding on and don’t give up. God gives a battle to his strongest soldiers, and their must be a reason he chose you, because he saw potential. I’m in that group too, I’m battling two disorders that drive me insane and sometimes they win more then I do, sometimes I find myself laying in bed hopeless but it’s good to know that I’m not alone. That even if my family and friend don’t understand what I’m going through, someone is out there and know exactly what it’s like. I want to be that person for you, don’t worry you aren’t alone. The feeling of dying, yeah I get that too. I feel the rapid heart beats, the feeling of your throat closing up and you can’t swallow, the feeling of fainting and feeling like you’re going crazy, the lump in throat, the shivers, the teeth cluttering, the numbness in each part of your body, the hypoventilation. I know what it is, and all the other symptoms that come along after you’ve already got use to the other ones. I know what it’s like to feel like you want to sleep or day, or sometimes not sleep at all. How sometimes life seems to bland for me, I’m wondering why I am existing.

You are alive, and the beauty of it is that you are the light in something so dark as what you carry inside of you. Turn the light on and never loose hope because I know you will overcome it. It’s not easy, and it won’t be. But I know you’re beautiful, I know  know you’re bold, and I know you’ll work it out because you’ve been doing it all along.
